TOK for subject teachers | Category 3

    21 JUNE 2018, THURSDAY
    08:30 - 09:00 Welcome and introduction
    09:00 - 10:30

    Session 1

“ToK: It’s not a question of thinking ‘outside the box,’ it’s just a question of thinking”: Unearthing the Essence of ToK.

The aim of this session is to remind ourselves of the kinds of knowledge questions that ToK deals with, and to remind ourselves how such questions are at the heart of every Diploma subject.

    10:30 - 11:00 Coffee break
    11:00 - 12:30

    Session 2

“If Music Be The Food Of ToK...”: Linking ToK To The ‘Real World’ Of Students, And Other Teaching Strategies.

Remember what it was like to be 16? When all you did was listen to music and watch films and TV series? These can be used to connect their learning in ToK with their other Diploma subjects.

    12:30 - 13:30 Lunch
    13:30 - 15:00

    Session 3

Knowledge Frameworks…As A Way Of Structuring ToK, And As A Way Of Introducing ToK In Other Subjects.

The reasons we chose to become Biologists, Historians, Mathematicians etc. were because the ‘philosophical’ questions at the heart of those subjects fascinated us, and still do. We can use these to help students to make links between ToK and their other Diploma subjects.

    15:00 - 15:15 Coffee break
    15:15 - 16:45

    Session 4

CAS (and other aspects of the ‘real world’…) as an ‘Area of Knowledge’ in ToK.

One of the hallmarks of the IB ethos is the central place of CAS activities. How can we encourage students to see the essential knowledge questions that their commitment raises, and how can these be linked to their work in ToK and in their other Diploma subjects?

    22 JUNE 2018, FRIDAY
    09:00 - 11:00 Session 5

‘Poker Face’: In Search Of Connections and Counterintuitive Links Between AOKs and WOKs.

A competitive, yet collaborative, card game for first thing in the morning, whose aim is to help us understand the interconnections between Ways of Knowing and Areas of Knowledge, and see how present the question that arise as a result are implicit in our own disciplines!

(This will be a joint session with the Category 2 ToK participants)

    10:30 - 11:00 Coffee break
    11:30 - 12:30

    Session 6

Integrating ToK Into and With Other Subject Areas Part 1.

…without actually having to do more than we are already doing!

    12:30 - 13:30 Lunch
    13:30 - 15:30

    Session 7

Integrating ToK Into and With Other Subject Areas (...With An Eye On Producing ‘SEXCI’

    Essays) Part 2.

…still without having to do more than we are already doing! Students tend to want to re-invent the wheel when it comes to ToK Assessed Essays and Presentations…but the core of these lies in what we are already learning and teaching in all our Diploma subjects.

(This will be a joint session with the Category 2 ToK participants)

    15:30 - 15:45 Coffee break
    15:45 - 16:45

    Session 8

‘Show & Tell’, A.K.A. ‘Ideas Exchange.’

One of the most gratifying aspects of IB workshops is meeting colleagues from around the world and sharing our experiences and skills. This session aims to showcase precisely that.

    23 JUNE 2018, SATURDAY
    09:00 - 10:30

    Session 9

Assessment: The ToK Presentation, And ‘Real World’ Knowledge Issues.

Presentations routinely suffer from either a surfeit of description, or a ‘listing’ approach to the Areas of Knowledge and Ways of Knowing ‘present’ in the ‘real-world’ knowledge issue, or even from an inappropriate ‘real-world’ situation. We will, thus, be looking at ways to avoid all three common problems and, again, highlighting the help that teachers of other subjects can provide students when preparing these presentations.

(This will be a joint session with the Category 2 ToK participants)

    10:30 - 11:00 Coffee break
    11:00 - 12:30

    Session 10

    Assessment: The ToK Assessed Essay.

We will be focusing on the Assessment Instrument for the Assessed Essays, highlighting the help that teachers of other subjects can provide students when preparing these essays.
