14 Ecology and conservation (Option C)
This topic introduces students to some more conceptual aspects in the study of ecology, including the niche, limiting factors, succession, and nutrient cycling. There is a requirement for critical thinking and analysis that distinguishes it from other topics in the IBDP biology course. Teachers should emphasise the objective 3 command terms (discuss, evaluate, analyse, comment), as well as the idea of emergent properties when designing a unit in Ecology and conservation.
Only one option topic is required (15 hours at Standard Level; 25 hours at Higher Level).
